For apparent lack of anything else to talk about lately, I thought I'd update y'all about my garden.
Yes, it's still alive. My black thumb hasn't killed everything yet.
In fact, it's growing like weeds... er... grass, in our case. After the roto-tilling and planting I was planning to put down the black plastic garden fabric to keep the time-consuming weeding to a minimum. And then the Texas wind gusts hit. You should have seen me trying to lay these big long sheets of plastic down in 40mph winds, and digging up dirt to spread on top and hold them down. Anyway, I got a few strips laid out but need to put down more. So, grass has taken over a good portion of the garden.
Here, mixed in with the grass is rows of radishes and one of carrots.

Then here's some bush beans. The overabundant rains seemed to have stunted their growth some, but they're hanging in there.

I've had a compost heap going for about a year now, to use as fertilizer. I threw some old potatoes on it a while back, and next thing I knew I had potato plants growing out of it. So I replanted them into the garden, and they're doing well.

I also started my Big Max pumpkins, watermelon, (top of pic) and bell peppers (bottom) in pots. I'll let them grow a bit more and then plant them (then cross my fingers that they survive the transplant!)

Can you believe my grapevine is still alive? The cold snap really shocked it, but it finally sprouted new leaves again about a month ago. Gotta get a trellis for it.
So after roto-tilling up half the backyard, fighting 100 yards of plastic in the wind, digging in the dirt, watering, and spending countless (future) hours pulling grass/weeds....
I can at least boast of ONE REAL VEGGIE:
beautiful red radish, and it only cost $100.00.....lol...........kidding girl, proud of you. So with the grape-vine, we'll have that wine after all. Love gardening, and its so much fun when the harvest begins, especially at todays produce prices. I've had green onions now over a month, given up tomatoes this year, the kids didnt water them when I was gone last year at times and it was a waste.Looking forward to more pictures (of the garden), best wishes for a bountiful harvest.
ReplyDeleteYa know, you're pretty close to being on target... $50 roto-tiller rental, $30 garden fabric, $10 seeds, gloves, new hoe...
ReplyDeleteI wanted onions, but didn't get them early enough. And I did the tomato plants different this year, I tried starting them from seed before but by the time they flowered it was too hot so they didn't develop any fruit. This time I bought 3" plants instead! And I already have some cherry tomatoes growing (yea!)
I also have a jalepeno plant with some peppers growing on it, and some squash plants... but the pics didn't show up very well.
Good to hear from ya Jaydee!
Looks to me like you need to just rent a lawn mower.
